What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is a holistic, complementary therapy based on the theory that specific areas of the feet and hands correspond to different organs and systems in the body. By using pressure techniques on these reflex points, reflexologists aim to promote relaxation and support the body’s natural healing processes.
Reflexology is believed to have originated in ancient Egypt, with evidence suggesting that similar practices were used as far back as 2300 BCE. The practice also has roots in ancient Chinese medicine which emphasises the connection between the body organs and specific points on the feet and hands.
It is important to note that reflexologists do not diagnose or cure. Treatment should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice where necessary.
During a reflexology appointment a client can expect:
- An initial Consultation: A confidential discussion of health history and specific concerns.
- Foot Examination: The reflexologist may examine the feet for any issues.
- A treatment session typically lasts 45 to 60 minutes, focusing on reflex points and massage of the foot and lower leg. NB: Essential oil reflexology cream will be used so please advise if you have any allergies.
- Aftercare Advice: Tips for maintaining health and well-being post-session.
Reflexology offers several potential benefits:
- Relaxation and release of tension: Reflexology can promote deep relaxation, which may help to reduce stress and anxiety levels.
- Improved sleep: Reflexology helps to promote a feeling of calmness that may make it easier to relax and fall asleep.
- Support for Overall Health: Reflexology can promote a sense of wellbeing and improve mood.
If you are considering reflexology it’s always a good idea to consult with a qualified practitioner to ensure it’s appropriate for your specific health situation.
As with all treatments, inform your therapist of any medical conditions you may have and tell them if you are – or just think you might be – pregnant.
