Following research at Oxford Univeristy people wth early memory loss may be offered a range of B vitamins alongside fatty acids.
The two year study on Alzheimer’s showed that a combination of Vitamins B6, B12 and folic acid with omega 3 fatty acids prevented brain shrinkage – a characteristic of Alzheimer’s.
Professor David Smith will meet government officials with a view to changing NHS practice as this is first study to show that brain shrinkage can be prevented by supplementing with B Vitamins and ensuring high omega 3 level
In the study of people who had memory problems brain atrophy was slowed by 70% in patients who had high levels of these particular nutrients
Good sources of Omega 3 fatty acids include oily fish such as mackerel, herring, wild salmon, trout, sprats, whitebait, anchovies, sardines and fresh tuna.
