There is an abundance of lovely seasonal fruits and vegetables in the shops so there are no excuses not to be getting our 5+ a day.
A new study that followed more than 100,000 Danish people has found that a high intake of Vitamin C may be linked to reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and early death.
Dr Camilla Kobylecki said: ‘….those with the highest intake of fruit and vegetables have a 15% lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease and a 20% lower risk of early death compared with those who rarely eat fruit or vegetables…….the reduced risk is related to high Vitamin C concentrations in the blood from the fruit and vegetables’.
The research team are continuing their research into Vitamin C and other factors that can improve long term health.
The best sources of Vitamin C include:
- Red and green peppers
- Strawberries and other summer berries
- Cantaloupe melon
- Papaya
- Citrus fruits
- Broccoli
- Cauliflower
- Dark green leafy veg such as kale
- mangetout
