Have you ever wondered why low back and neck pain can arrive just out of the blue and cripple you completely when there is no obvious trauma related to blame?  Not even a heroic injury from lifing or digging in the garden!

At Luck’s Yard we call it the iceberg syndrome.  Usually we ignore little messages of pain in our bodies and go about our daily lives without taking much notice.  It is not just a British trait, it occurs everywhere on the globe. ‘Oh, it will get better tomorrow….’ we say to ourselves. But does it really get better by itself?

However, as we ofen sit incorrectly or drive for too long, use the computer too much, lie badly and madly rush about, we often create little stresses and strains in our bodies, which we ignore and leave until the absolute end.

Eventually when the tension is too strained, it needs very little to push it over the edge. I call this the “putting the lid on the box” syndrome: when we put all our stresses and strains in the box and ignore them, the box will eventually fill up and the lid will pop open.

An acute symptom is what we would call the tip of the iceberg. But there might be a lot more going on below than meets the eye: iceberg syndrome usually occurs in combination with stress of some sort.

At Luck’s Yard we estimate that 70% of our patients are under some form of stress in their lives. Stress is a symptom of when our bodies are out of balance and perhaps overworked. It can be physical, emotional or nutritional and much more.

When we are stressed our central nervous system activity can be raised, the tension is higher, and might push the nerve impulses at a higher rate than normal around the body, and kind of wind us up. All systems will be on alert and the muscles and membranes are directly in contact with these nervous messages. You could say it creates a tension in the “tone” of the soft tissues and this may render the muscles more fragile and hence more prone to injury and so the balance can be easily tipped over.

So listen to the messages your body is giving you – don’t suffer in silence but take positive action to ensure the pain or injury is kept in check.
