We are constantly bombarded with news of the latest dietary trend be it paleo (stoneage diet); keto; low carb; low fat etc etc.

The amount of information about what we should or should not be eating can be confusing and demoralizing but it needn’t be that way.

As I have written in the previous top tip blogs, simple rules include being able to recognize what we are eating, cooking from scratch and reducing ultra processed foods.

We need a combination of macro nutrients in our diet – fats, carbohydrates and proteins which provide energy and micro nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and antioxidants for our general health and wellbeing.  It is not only the quality of these foods that is important but how we put them together on a plate.

It is possible to practice a form of food combining on your plate to not only get the right combination of nutrients eg complete amino acids, but also to suit your own personal dietary needs. For example, you may be trying to keep to a lower carb diet but you can still chose those that will provide energy without contributing to weight gain.

The British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine (BANT) has produced Wellbeing guidelines in easy to access posters which you can download from their website here:

Although we have unique nutritional and lifestyle needs, this information is a good place to start for helping support healthier choices.
